If you are noticing more hair on your brush, the floor and in the shower drain, relax, you are not alone!
The reason why Autumn is called “Fall” is that as we move towards the winter season, the leaves fall, animals shed their coats to prepare for the cold weather by growing a thicker one and humans shed more than their normal amount of hair daily.
However, there are also other reasons why we lose hair and it is definitely nothing to do with the products we use or what our hair care professionals use.
Here are some of the reasons:
Stress. When we are stressed, the scalp tightens and the blood flow into
the hair follicles, (where new hair is formed,) becomes constricted. Hair
that is in its normal falling state is not replaced by new hair.Alopecia. This is a medical condition which can take many forms, often
seen as patches of complete hair loss. This can be caused by stress, usually
grows back but the regrowth can often be pure white.Hormone changes. Following childbirth, during and after menopause are
normal causes. In the case of childbirth, the hair grows back once the
hormones level out and go back to normal.Vitamin deficiency, such as the B vitamins, also Zinc or Iron can cause hair
loss.Protein deficiency. Maintaining a healthy diet is important for good hair
quality, which definitely includes the recommended daily amount of
protein.Chemotherapy. This can be a complete loss of hair, but usually grows back,
often in a different form. For example, someone who has had straight hair
may suddenly grow back extremely tight curls.Male Pattern Baldness. Often hereditary, caused by a weakening of the
sex hormones, (androgens,) which regulate hair growth. The hair becomes
finer and weaker and gradually stops growing at all. The most usual pattern
begins at the temples, or on the crown of the head.Thyroid irregularities can also cause hair loss. If the thyroid is sluggish,
then the production of new hair slows dramatically.
Having said all this, if you suddenly begin to lose large amounts of hair, definitely consult your health professional and get to the “root” of the cause.
In the meantime, to protect the quality of your hair, follow the advice of your hair professional as to the products that you need to maintain that salon style and to stay looking beautiful every day.
